Today in class we went in-depth on the topic of claims. There are three types of claims. The first is claim of fact is to argue that something is or isn’t true. Next is claim of value, this is how something does or doesn’t meet a certain criteria. Last is claim of policy, this is when you make a claim with intent to make a change. Saying that pizza is the best food is an example of claim of value. Arguing that marijuana should be legalized is an example of claim of policy.
Today in class we learned about rhetorical devices. The first one we discussed was hyperbole, which is an exaggeration. The second was understatement. An understatement is the force of a descriptive statement that is less than what one would normally expect. Third we went over litotes, which are an emphasis on a point by using a word opposite to the condition. Fourth we learned antithesis, this makes use of a contrast in language to bring out a contrast in ideals. Lastly we were introduced to hypophora which is asking a question then proceeding to answer it.
