Today in class we analyzed an eulogy. The eulogy was written by Margaret Thatcher. We also discussed the format of the rhetorical analysis essay. I was really taken aback by the fact that we only have 7-10 minutes to analyze and plan the essay out. I’ll have to practice very hard to be successful. Todays class wasn’t very energetic, but it was still informative.
Today in class we learned about rhetorical devices. The first one we discussed was hyperbole, which is an exaggeration. The second was understatement. An understatement is the force of a descriptive statement that is less than what one would normally expect. Third we went over litotes, which are an emphasis on a point by using a word opposite to the condition. Fourth we learned antithesis, this makes use of a contrast in language to bring out a contrast in ideals. Lastly we were introduced to hypophora which is asking a question then proceeding to answer it.
